As well as creating outstanding productions Red Leap Theatre are committed to developing and sharing our craft. We believe theatre is for everyone and that creativity develops the capacity to imagine the world differently.

We offer mentoring and workshops focusing on originality, physicality and imagery. Over the past 9 years Directors Kate Parker and Julie Nolan’s devising and theatre workshops have been offered extensively to young people and experienced professionals including teachers, through organizations such as Unitec School of Performing and Screen Arts, University of Auckland, Auckland Theatre Company, Massive Company, Excel, Performing Arts School of NZ and several Auckland secondary schools as well as the Artist in Residence programme with Hong Kong Arts Festival in 2009

Red Leap INCUBATOR

Aimed at professional theatre practitioners to work specifically on seeding new devised work.

Designed to physically challenge and develop ideas in a practical way.

Inventing new work through strengthening the physical connection and play within the performers.  Generating a quantity of material, from which quality can be distilled.  It allows the artist to let go of the preciousness of creating and get on with the making without analysing too hard.

Focussing strongly on impulse, creative commitment and joy of the performer.  These workshops will include a range of physical activity but are designed for actors who like being physical.  ie. you don't have to move like an acrobat to be a part of this.

Red Leap INTENSIVE

Aimed at emerging artists and young people. This is a practical workshopping process using devise physical theatre techniques.

Looking at group physicality and awareness, creative commitment, impulse and play.

Themes that can be covered range from neutral mask to melodrama.

The actors explore a range of provoking elements such as text, imagery, sound and materials (paper, fabric, cardboard).

Generating lots of material allows the artist to relax and let the preciousness of creation go.

Red Leap INSPIRER

Aimed at teachers and facilitators of drama.

A practical devised physical performance spice up.

Covering a range of techniques which Red Leap use themselves on the floor to create theatre that is connected and compelling.

Gain helpful tools to use in the classroom to generate devised work.

Being in a classroom environment with the limitations of this is always a challenge especially with the trust, committment and (the biggest one) TIME which it takes to create devised theatre.  This programme is designed to establish practices that will generate good devised work.

It's also great for a spice up of your already established practice.

Red Leap Theatre love being inventive and are inspired to create interesting image based theatre.  So through all of these workshops they will generally reflect that desire to create utilising materials and potentially characters that animate.  Depending on a workshops length and budget Red Leap are able to go more into depth with this process.

Red Leap INVENTIVE

This is a workshop based around a group wanting to create a performance.

There are several ways of this operating so please discuss your needs with us.

Usually we would work intensively over a period of a week or more and then leave for two or three weeks to allow the work building time - making the things needed or creating more physical material - facilitated by the director/teacher. We then return for another week or more to produce the performance.

There are myriad of paths to take within this process so discussion is necessary about what is best for the group.
